National (statlig) income tax only, inkomstår 2025 — brackets reflect central government tax exclusively. Sweden's ~290 municipalities each levy an additional flat kommunal skatt (municipal + county tax) averaging 32.41% in 2025 on all taxable income from the first krona (no threshold); that municipal component is excluded here, since this schedule covers the national rate only. National-only plus average municipal reproduces the stored headline rate exactly (20% + 32.41% = 52.41%).

VAT

In practice

Filing

Small and medium-sized businesses do not need to register for VAT, and are automatically exempt from VAT liability, while their annual turnover in Sweden stays at or below SEK 120,000 for the current calendar year and for each of the two preceding calendar years; a Sweden-based business that exceeds that threshold in any of those years must register.

Capital Gains Tax

Sweden taxes capital gains on listed shares and other stock at a flat 30%, calculated on the sale price less the average purchase price of the holding. Only 70% of any capital loss is normally deductible.

In practice

Exemptions

Gains on assets held within an Investeringssparkonto (ISK) are not taxed as capital gains at all; the account is instead subject each year to a flat 30% tax on a standardized notional yield calculated from its total asset value, above a tax-free base amount of SEK 300,000.

Crypto Tax

Sweden taxes gains from selling or exchanging cryptocurrency as capital income at a flat 30% rate. The gain is sale proceeds minus a cost basis computed under the average method; losses are only 70% deductible.

Wealth Tax

No net wealth tax currently levied in Sweden. Sweden previously had a wealth tax (förmögenhetsskatt), which was abolished as of 1 January 2007.
