The threshold for mandatory VAT registration is SCR 2 million in taxable supplies made or reasonably expected to be made within a given period. Effective 1 January 2025, voluntary registration became available, subject to SRC approval, to businesses with taxable supplies between SCR 100,000 and the SCR 2 million mandatory threshold.

Exports of goods and specific items listed in Schedule 2 of the VAT Act 2010 are zero-rated. A separate list of exempt supplies under Schedule 1 includes pharmaceutical products, infant formula, nappies and other basic necessities such as rice and lentils, along with education, health, and financial services; unlike zero-rated supplies, exempt supplies carry no input-tax credit.
